I love the idea of make your own food parties. Food bars are where you let the guests construct their own meal from the ingredients you put out. I’ve seen pizza bars, taco bars, baked potato bars, and cupcake bars. But the best bar ever?
The cupcake bar. A Sandwich Bar. And what better sandwich to start with than a BLT!
I have been dying for a BLT ever since our tomatoes started coming in. But I hadn’t had one, because I was prejudiced against vegan bacon. Well… I got that sorted out in short order by making both coconut bacon and eggplant bacon! Spoiler alert: They were really good!
But to me, the star of a BLT has never been the bacon. It’s the tomato. Really the sandwich should be called a TLB or a TBL… put that tomato in front where it belongs! For a great BLT Party, be sure to get multiple types of tomatoes.
I just picked some from the backyard. These are Better Boys, German Johnsons (the huge ones), and I think the darker ones are Cherokee Purple. But I’m horrible at labeling things I plant, so don’t quote me on that. If you want different types of tomatoes, you might have to visit a fancy grocery store, or better yet… hit up your local farmer’s market! Where we are, the farmer’s market is cheaper, fresher, and better.
So we have bacon and tomatoes covered, what else do we need? Lettuce! I got a variety of lettuces at the grocery. They were all really good. Get adventurous! There is more to lettuce than just iceberg. If there is one thing that has upped our sandwich game, it is variety. Speaking of…
Get an assortment of bread. Really, I could have gone crazy with the bread. I wish I had bought a nice pumpernickel, but these breads were really good. Buy from the bakery section of your supermarket if you have one! The bread tastes better and isn’t full of so many preservatives.

What’s left? A whole lot of good stuff. Let’s start with the mayonnaise.
Before I started on my Savage Sandwich journey, I used plain old boring mayonnaise on my sandwiches. Ugh. So much wasted potential. Here are just two flavored mayonnaises that I now make regularly.
- Roasted-Garlic Basil Mayo – If I were to have a signature mayonnaise, this would be it. It is sooooo good. Really. You just smush together mayo and roasted garlic and add chopped up basil. If you don’t love it, there is something wrong with you.
- Sriracha Mayo – Does anyone remember a while back when sriracha was not going to be available? I don’t know why or what happened, but you better believe we went out and bought, like, 16 bottles. For those who don’t know, it’s a hot sauce. Just mix mayo and sriracha to the desired hotness. Bam!
For the record, I use Vegenaise Mayo. But you could use any vegan mayonnaise you like. And don’t stop at these two! Get creative! There are lots of awesome mayo’s you could make.
So now you have the basics of a BLT. But you can add any other toppings you want! I also put out sun-dried tomatoes and avocado. But what about pickles, olives, onions, pesto… I could go on and on. Anything that might be good on a BLT can go on your table! Speaking of:
